GPT-4o Removed – What is OpenAI’s new strategy?
OpenAI Is Doing Major Cleanup in the ChatGPT AI Tool: GPT-4o and Other Models Are Becoming History
GPT-4o removed, While ChatGPT’s technology continues to be constantly updated, OpenAI has taken a new decision as part of these updates. The company announced that it will remove some older artificial intelligence models used in ChatGPT starting next month. At the center of this decision is GPT-4o, which was once one of its most popular tools. The changes are interpreted as a clear sign of OpenAI’s strategy to focus on next-generation models.
Why is OpenAI shelving the GPT-40 Removed and other models??
Competition in the artificial intelligence space is extremely intense. As more powerful, faster, and better models are developed, older models become more costly to maintain and start to fall behind for users.
- The company’s stance is quite clear:
- Removing less-used models
- Directing users toward newer models
- Providing users with a faster and more advanced experience
In line with this approach, OpenAI is simplifying and reorganizing the models within ChatGPT and largely steering users toward newer models such as the GPT-5 series.

Why Did GPT-4o Removed, Attract So Much Attention?
When GPT-4o was introduced in May 2024, it marked an important milestone for OpenAI. Developed with an “Omni” approach, the model stood out for its ability to handle different types of data—such as text, images, and audio—more smoothly. In particular:
- A more human-like conversation experience
- Faster response times
- Advanced multimodal capabilities
These features helped GPT-4o quickly prove itself to users.
GPT-4o Had Been Removed Before
This is not the first time GPT-4o has been removed from ChatGPT. The model was quietly taken down in August 2024. However, after receiving heavy complaints and criticism at the time, OpenAI brought it back to the platform. Initially, access was restored for paid users.
This time, however, the situation looks different. The company announced that GPT-4o will be completely removed as of February. According to OpenAI, there is strong analysis behind this decision: only 0.1% of users actively use GPT-4o.
Which Other Models Will Be GPT-4o Removed?
GPT-4o may seem like the only model being affected, but it is not the only one. According to OpenAI’s statement, the models that will be removed from ChatGPT next month are:
- GPT-4o
- GPT-4.1
- GPT-4.1 mini
- o4 mini
In addition to these, OpenAI had previously stated that GPT-5 Instant and GPT-5 Thinking models would also be retired in the future. This shows that the company is preparing to significantly simplify its model portfolio.
What Does This Change Mean for Users?
In the short term, some users will need to adjust to changes in the models they are used to. Especially those who relied on GPT-4o or GPT-4.1 may need some time to adapt to new models—but they have no other choice if they want to continue using ChatGPT.
In the long run, however, OpenAI’s move aims to make the user experience more stable and efficient. Having fewer but much more powerful and intelligent models brings the following advantages:
- Reduced confusion when choosing between models
- More predictable and faster performance
- More frequent improvements
- A clearer roadmap for developers
For this reason, while the change may initially feel like a nostalgic and somewhat sad “farewell,” it appears to be a logical decision from a strategic standpoint.
